Playing for a Higher Purpose: Part 1

Playing for a Higher Purpose: Part 1

Glorifying God On and Off the Field

Soccer is more than just a game. It’s passion, discipline, teamwork—and for those of us who follow Jesus, it’s also a platform for worship. Whether you're scoring goals, defending your net, coaching from the sidelines, or cheering from the stands, every moment on and off the field is an opportunity to honor God.

Whatever You Do, Do It for the Lord

The Bible reminds us in Colossians 3:23,

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

That includes soccer. Every pass, every sprint, every sacrifice made in training can become an act of worship when done with the right heart. It’s not about the spotlight or the scoreboard—it’s about giving God your best, even in the simplest moments.

A Different Kind of Goal

In a culture that often celebrates fame, stats, and highlight reels, we’re called to live for a higher goal—to reflect Jesus in everything we do. That means showing sportsmanship when tensions rise, offering encouragement instead of criticism, and being a teammate who serves rather than seeks glory.

When we play for God, we play with purpose, not pressure. Winning becomes secondary to how we carry ourselves, how we love others, and how we shine His light through our effort and attitude.

Real Life Inspiration: The Athlete Who Points to Jesus

You don’t have to be a pro to be a witness. Maybe it’s praying with your team before a game, writing a Bible verse on your cleats, or simply offering forgiveness to an opponent who wronged you. These small acts can speak volumes.

Some of the world’s top athletes like Kaká, Alphonso Davies, and Julie Ertz have boldly shared their faith, but the same impact can happen right where you are—in your school, club team, or weekend league.

On and Off the Pitch

Our faith doesn’t stop at the final whistle. How we live off the field matters just as much. Are we pursuing Christ in private as well as in public? Are we kind, generous, and humble in our daily lives? The habits we build outside the game shape how we play it.

Let’s be athletes, coaches, and fans who are rooted in faith and fueled by grace. Let’s compete with intensity but also with integrity. Let’s play not just for the crowd—but for an audience of One.

Challenge of the Week

Before your next game or practice, take a moment to pray. Ask God to help you play with joy, humility, and boldness—for His glory, not yours.

And remember: The scoreboard may fade, but a life lived for Christ lasts forever.
